Usage of Coco Peat and Coconut Husk Substrates

Coco peat (also known as coconut pith) is produced as coir dust, a by-product of coconut husk processing while making coir and other products. The processed coir dust becomes coco peat and it is a very good growing medium for plants.

1. Agricultural usage

Coco Peat is an organic ingredient that keeps the soil loose, which in turn enables roots to spread out easily, enjoy more breathing space and aeration (air porosity), and consequently achieve better plant growth throughout its life compared to the potting soil which is getting hardened and caked up over time. Also, Coco peat has high water retention capacity and therefore need not water the plants daily and gradually release the water to the plant when needed. Further Coco peat will help controls weeds growth as well. Thus coco peat is emerging as a good alternative to mined peat moss and is used in homes, gardens and horticulture centres for seed starting, bedding plants, container plants, and more.

2. Greenhouse applications

The wonder material in Green Houses and Grow Domes. Revolutionized the agriculture practices as Coco peat replaces the materials like Peat moss, rock wool in agricultural industry due to its super efficiency, low handling cost, low water consumption, low labour cost and no harm to the natural environment as this is an eco-friendly 100% bio-degradable renewable source

3. Base material for Potting Soil Industry

Coco Peat and Coconut husk chips use in many countries as the base material for the potting soil industry. This is an ideal material for this industry due to Coco Peat’s high absorbent nature and high air fill porosity even when saturated with water.

4. Use as animal bedding

Coco peat use as animal bedding such as in poultry farms, cattle farms, horse sheds etc. The idea of using either coco peat or coconut husk chips due to its high absorbent nature, less fungi and bacteria development etc. Later these used coco peat and coconut husk chips can be used as compost for plants.

5. Use in Terrariums

Another popular and fast-growing industry is using coco peat terrariums. Pet sheds such as cats and dogs are regularly uses coco peat due to its absorbent nature, controls odour and bacteria development. Husk chips are mainly used in reptile cages, lizard cages, and tortoise cages etc. Also, there is a great demand for coco peat and coconut husk chips from zoos around the world as well.

6. Use as Ground Soil Conditioning

The fibrous nature of coco peat helps to bind together the loose soil and retain the moisture level accordingly to develop helpful bacteria and other organisms. Also, the long-decaying period of coconut substrates gives enough time to built the humus soil layers and prevents them washing away. Hence adding coco peat or coconut husk mulch will enrich the soil eventually

7. Use as an insulator

To cover the plant beds and flower pots during winter and summer both. Mainly use coco chips as it prevents plants and the soil going dry due to moisture evaporation during summer and prevents frost bite of plant roots during winter

8. Use as mulching

Very good substitute for wood or wood bark mulching. Low cost, environmentally friendly and easy to use.

9. Use in Landscaping industry

Due to the absorbent nature as well as sponginess, coco peat heavily use in landscaping industry as well as golf course development. Also uses coco peat for soil conditioning in these industries as well.

10. Use as wiping medium

Again due to its absorbent nature, coco peat are using at fuel and oil distribution stations as wiping medium for fuel and oil spills
